Students who attend the SOAR program experience an easier transition to UNC Charlotte. The experience that you will have at SOAR is much more than a campus tour. During your SOAR experience you will:

  • Register for the upcoming semester
  • Meet with an academic advisor within your major department
  • Take the required placement exams
  • Receive your student I.D.
  • Connect with important campus departments, such as Housing and Financial Aid.

In addition to connecting with campus resources and your academic department, SOAR also provides you with an opportunity to begin acclimating to the university community. During your SOAR day, you will be assigned to an Orientation Counselor to assist you with any needs you might have. You will also have the opportunity to interact with fellow incoming new students.

During spring SOAR sessions, some of our meals and general academic workshops will be held with both student and family but otherwise, students and family will be separate so they can learn information that pertains specifically to them. This gives families the opportunities to get the most information possible and give the students an opportunity to see the university on their own.

It is highly recommended that you pay for your registration for SOAR prior to your session date. Without a payment, we cannot secure your place in a particular session, thus if a session fills before a payment is made; the student must select another SOAR session to attend.

Yes. Students must remain with the program throughout its duration. All incoming first-year and transfer students are required to stay for the duration of the program. Critical information is given to our incoming students throughout the SOAR session; information you don’t want to miss. If students miss sessions or any critical infromation within the SOAR program, you may be asked to attend a different SOAR session in it's entirety. Should an emergency occur that prevents you from remaining with the SOAR program, please notify a member of the SOAR Staff as soon as possible. Parents and family members are not required to stay for the entire family program; however, it is strongly encouraged.

Adding an additional guest to your SOAR Registration can be done by logging into the SOAR Registration website (http://soar.uncc.edu) and including the individual on the “Guest” tab of your SOAR Registration. Payment for these newly added guests can be done using a credit card or debit card while logged into the SOAR Registration website.

You can make changes to your SOAR Registration anytime by logging into the SOAR registration website (http://soar.uncc.edu) and selecting the accommodations you need.

Registration for SOAR can be done by visiting the SOAR website ( http://soar.uncc.edu), then clicking on the “Register for SOAR” link, located on the left side of the page. From there you will want to click on the link directing you to the registration website.

SOAR Sessions for students entering in the spring are one day programs. These programs begin during check-in and conclude at approximately 5:00 p.m. 

We make locating buildings on campus as easy as possible, by placing green and yellow SOAR signs across campus, pointing you to the key locations throughout the program. In addition, our orientation counselors will be available to guide you from the parking lot to check-in until the program starts. Once you're in the program, we'll guide you throughout campus.

The SOAR Registration fee covers all materials throughout the program, various meals, and the student’s housing accommodations for the evening. Additional charges upon registration may include guest housing accommodations and “early arrival” housing. Any additional costs at SOAR should be completely voluntary, unless otherwise noted by the SOAR program.

If you are not going to enroll at UNC Charlotte for the semester you were admitted, please contact the SOAR Office at (704) 687-0340 weekdays between the hours of 8:00am until 5:00pm to notify our staff of your cancellation. Once we have keyed in your cancellation, a refund will be issued. (Please note the SOAR Refund Policy.)

You can reschedule your SOAR session by logging into the SOAR Registration website (http://soar.uncc.edu) and choosing a different SOAR session to attend. There is no additional charge associated with changing your session date.

No. At SOAR, there is a parent session of academic advising in which family can learn more about their student’s major college and advisors. However, due to FERPA regulations, parents or family members cannot attend registration for classes. We can assure that your student will meet with their academic advisor (assigned based on their major), and our orientation counselors will be readily available to assist our incoming students with the registration process.For more information on FERPA please see the following link for more information.

Our registration website updates itself every (6) six hours. It is strongly recommended to check back after 6pm that evening or again the following morning.

Typically, the SOAR check-in process runs from 7:30 a.m. until 8:00 a.m.; however, should you arrive after 8:00am, please make your way to the second floor of the Student Union. Please note that all elements of the SOAR program are required for all incoming new students so depending on when you arrive, you may be asked to attend a different session should any critical information be missed. Should an emergency arise that conflicts with the SOAR session you're attending, please contact the SOAR office so we can do our best to support.

The Department of Biological Sciences established a placement exam to determine preparedness for introductory majors level biology courses. We will again be using the exam for Summer and Fall 2018 registration. The exam results will allow us to place students into the most appropriate introductory course.  If students have not had a biology course recently or have previously struggled in biology courses we still recommend taking BIOL 1110 (and earning a B or higher) as a pre-requisite prep course to BIOL 2120. The exam will be available on Canvas until Friday, August 17 2018 at Noon.

If you would like to access the exam for the fall semester please have them contact Tonya Bates, Stan Schneider or Sue Levin directly (contact information is below). Alternatively, you can enroll in BIOL 1110, earn a B or higher and enroll in BIOL 2120  in the following semester. 

Exam Format

  • The placement exam is currently administered via Canvas and is set up as 50 multiple-choice questions. Students have exactly 60 minutes to complete and submit the placement exam. 
  • Students have a maximum of two attempts on the exam.
  • Students receive their score immediately and are provided an explanation for the next steps for pursuing biology courses at UNC Charlotte.

SOAR is where students are introduced to the campus, meet with their academic advisors, learn about university policies and register for their classes. Most academic advisors will not meet with incoming students outside of the SOAR program, so in order to have your SOAR and academic advising holds removed from your records; you must attend all components of SOAR. 

Yes. Our campus is not only beautiful but hilly as well, so it is imperative that both students and family members wear comfortable shoes during SOAR. If you need wheelchair/ transportation accommodations, you may make arrangements by contacting Disability Services at (704) 687-0040 weekdays between 8:00am until 5:00pm.

I am transferring into UNC Charlotte and provided my last institution with a copy of my immunization records. May I have them send a copy/fax of my immunization records to UNC Charlotte?

Yes, you may request a copy of your immunization records from your previous university to be sent directly to the Immunizations Department. Please visit www.studenthealth.uncc.edu for contact information. Please note: immunization records are NOT automatically transferred. Transcripts that contain immunizations sent during the admission process are used for the purposes of admission only.

To discuss options in case-specific occurrences regarding the submission of immunization records, please contact the Student Health Center at (704) 687-7424 weekdays between 8:30am and 5:00pm.

  • For First-Year/Freshman SOAR, students should bring with them the following items: a photo ID, confirmation packet, parking pass, Virtual SOAR completion page.
  • For Transfer SOAR, students should bring with them the following items: a photo ID,  a copy of your unofficial transcripts, confirmation packet, parking pass, and Virtual SOAR completion page.

Unfortunately, we do not provide a copy of the session schedule prior to SOAR because we want to provide our students and families the most up to date information regarding their session. For specific questions regarding the schedule of events, please visit the SOAR website, (http://soar.uncc.edu). During the program, you will attend a Welcome, learn information from campus resources, meet with your academic college, register for classes and more.

SOAR Check-In is from 7:30 - 8:00 a.m. for all students.  First-Year and Transfer SOAR check-in is in room 200 of the Popp Martin Student Union.

Your immunization records are due when you are admitted to the university and should be submitted to the Student Health Center for review by the first day of class according to state law. Failure to comply with the law will result in being dropped from classes and losing on-campus housing if applicable. It may take extended lengths of time to obtain records from other facilities, thus it is recommended that you submit your records immediately upon learning of your admission into UNC Charlotte. Registration for Spring 2019 opens on October 15, 2018. Registration for Summer 2019 opens in April and remains available throughout the spring and summer. You may register any time of day as well.

If your major is incorrect at the time of registration, please contact The Office of Undergraduate Admissions at (704) 687-5541 weekdays between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm.

Parking for Summer SOAR will take place near Wallis Residence Hall in Lot 25. When you arrive on campus, please follow the yellow SOAR directional signs.

It is important to note that these are the designated parking areas for SOAR, and your vehicle will not be charged. Should you park in any other parking locations across campus, parking fees may apply.

The SOAR sessions displayed on your registration screen are those sessions in which your academic major is advising. If your major appears to be incorrect, please notify The Office of Undergraduate Admissions at (704) 687-5507 weekdays between the hours of 8:00am until 5:00pm.

The cost for orientation covers all information handed out and any meals provided during the program.

Students and parents/family members will have separate programs throughout the duration of SOAR. We do this because we understand that the needs of both groups are very different, and it is our goal to have your family leave SOAR feeling better prepared for the spring semester. There are, however, opportunities throughout the day where we encourage students and parents to regroup and share the knowledge they have gained throughout the SOAR experience.
