FALL TRANSFER Family SOAR
Parents and family members are critical in the success of their student’s transition to UNC Charlotte. First-Year Family SOAR is designed to introduce families to information and resources that will assist them in being the best support system for their students, as well as address their own transitions as family members of incoming college students.
While SOAR is not mandatory for family members, they are highly encouraged to attend as the program offers a wealth of information and opportunities to connect with other students, family members, faculty, and staff. (Please note: While family member attendance is not mandatory, student attendance is mandatory in order to be advised and register for their first semester.)
SOAR dates are available throughout the months of June, July, and August. Students may only attend a session if their major is available for academic advising. The SOAR reservation system only allows students to reserve sessions when their academic major is available. Please see the below dates and advisor availability chart to help identify the best available option for your family. Sessions will open on a rolling basis, with June sessions available first and additional sessions opening as they fill.
Sessions fill fast, so make sure you register for SOAR as soon as you can!
Summer 2020 Sessions will be held on:
- Transfer Session 1: Friday, June 5
- Transfer Session 2: Monday, June 8
- Transfer Session 3: Monday, June 15

- Please do not make any non-refundable travel arrangements until your student completes the SOAR reservation process and receives confirmation of their assigned SOAR session.
- Not all academic departments advise every session. Please have your student review First-Year SOAR Advising Availability (link) to confirm their major’s participation in a particular session.
- Students are only able to reserve a SOAR session where academic advising is available for their major.
In an effort to share as much important information as possible, we have designed sessions specifically for students and family members. Throughout the day, families will attend a variety of sessions together and apart from their student. A brief schedule overview is included:
- SOAR Check-in
- Family Forum
- Campus Life Interest Sessions
- 49er Community Presentations
- Lunch & Niner Central
- Introduction to Academics
- Academic College Overview
- Campus Resource Fair
Family Forum allows family members to ask our Orientation Counselors for advice on supporting their students as well as pose questions about the student experience at UNC Charlotte.
Families in need of special accommodations (i.e. mobility assistance, sign language interpreters, etc.) should include those requests with their SOAR reservation. For additional assistance, please contact New Student & Family Services at email@example.com.
In order to provide the best experience for all family members, New Student & Family Services asks that all accommodation requests be made at least five (5) business days in advance of their reserved session.
SOAR is just the beginning of family involvement at UNC Charlotte! New Student & Family Services offers a variety of different programs and services that seek to keep families informed and engaged in their student’s experience, including:

If you choose to attend SOAR, please be aware that some portions of the program are only open to students. Federal law broadly prohibits the disclosure of confidential information from student records, even to parents and family members – regardless of student’s tax status or the funding of the student’s education.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), enacted in 1974, has the primary purpose of protecting the privacy of student information by controlling access to, and disclosure of, students' education records. Faculty, staff, and administrative officers at UNC Charlotte are required by FERPA to treat education records confidentially unless a student provides written consent to disclose.Additional information about FERPA and the student waiver of protection is available at the Office of Legal Affairs.
