Transfer Student Orientation


On behalf of the University community, we would like to congratulate you on your admission to UNC Charlotte! We are sure you are excited about beginning your career as a 49er. In order to make your time here the most rewarding, you should take advantage of the SOAR Program. This program assists you with your transition to UNC Charlotte and allows you to meet with your academic advisor and register for your fall classes. You will also learn important information about the university and all of the services in place to promote your success.

Please note that in order to assist with the advising process, it is highly recommended that you bring a copy of your college transcripts. Your transcript evaluation report is available on the Admissions Office website: If you do not have access to a computer with internet capabilities contact the SOAR Office at (704)-687-5509.

In order to register for your first semester of classes, it is mandatory that all students attend all programs within a SOAR session. Failure to attend and participate may result in a student’s dismissal from the program.If a student misses any of the elements of the SOAR program, they will be asked to attend another SOAR session to complete this requirement.

In an effort to share as much important information as possible, we have designed sessions specifically for students and family members. For students, all sessions are mandatory and the full program must be completed in order to register for classes. A brief schedule overview is included:

Congratulations on your admission into UNC Charlotte. All incoming transfer students are required to participate in an on-campus Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) session.   Students may only attend an orientation sessions if their major is available for academic advising.  The SOAR registration system allows students to only register for orientation sessions at which their academic major is advising. Please see the below dates and advisor availability chart to help identify the best day. Sessions fill fast, so make sure you register for SOAR as soon as you can! Registration will open on April 1 at noon.

New Student & Family Services works hard to keep our orientation fees as one of the lowest in the state of North Carolina. All fees can be paid via the student registration portal. Student's are not officially registered for a SOAR program until the student program fee is paid.

See the below program fees:

Transfer Student Fee: $90
This includes one breakfast, lunch, all program materials and all other expenses associated with the program.

Parent/Family Member Fee: $55
This includes one breakfast, lunch, all program materials and expenses associated with the program. All parents/family members attending the SOAR program (regardless of age) must pay the $55 fee.

Parent/Family Member Optional Overnight Stay: $25 per person
Family members have the option to seek out overnight accommodations in Hunt Hall for the night of before their student's SOAR program. This fee is in addition to the $55 program fee.

Refunds: Requests for refunds may be submitted in writing five (5) business days in advance of the session. Refunds will not be granted for any reason after the five (5) business day timeline has expired. 

Special Notes:

  • Not all academic departments advise every session.
  • Students are only able to register for SOAR sessions at which academic advising is available for their major.
  • Should students need to change their major prior to registering for SOAR, contact the Office of Admissions at (704) 687-5507 or at; the process may take several business days to complete.

Students whose majors lie within the College of Arts and Architecture and Liberal Arts and Sciences in addition to those majoring in Nursing, Social Work and International Business must demonstrate a competency in either a foreign language or American Sign Language. You can access information regarding taking the proficiency exam at: Additional questions about foreign language requirements and exemptions for CLEP, AP, and prior course work is available at the website above or may be directed to the Department of Languages and Culture Studies at (704) 687-8754. The foreign language exam costs $10, and payment can only be received with a credit card through their office.

At Transfer SOAR sessions, students have the opportunity to meet with a representative from their academic college. Advisors and faculty members will be available to present specific information related to the student’s college and major. Should students need to change their major prior to registering for SOAR, contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at (704) 687-5507 or at; the process may take several business days to complete.
Check-In for January sessions is from 7:45 am – 8:45 a.m. for SOAR sessions and takes place at the Student Union, room 200.  Please remember to print your parking pass from the student's electronic confirmation packet. For more information on what to plan before SOAR and instructions for the day of arrival, please click here.
Getting to SOAR early? If you’re excited to get here and plan to arrive the night before your SOAR session, you may purchase a night’s lodging in Scott Hall via the online SOAR registration process. Campus housing is available the night before your SOAR session at an additional cost of $25 per person, and includes all linens and towels. To check-in for your early housing (make sure you pre-register) then arrive to the Hunt Hall 24-hour desk the evening prior to check-in to your hall. Students will stay in Scott Hall (right across the way) and families will stay in Hunt Hall. In the morning, please continue with the general SOAR programming by going downstairs between 7:30 a.m. - 8:15 a.m. 

Parking for transfer SOAR sessions is in the Popp Martin Student Union Parking Deck (next to building 69 on this map). Look for "SOAR" signs to direct you to the garage.  We will also have our students directing you to parking until our program begins at 8:00 a.m.

  • Once parked, take the stairs or elevator to the 6th floor of the garage to walk into the Popp Martin Student Union.
  • SOAR Check-In will be open for students who have pre-registered for the program from 7:30 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. in Popp Martin Student Union room 200.
  • It is very important that you arrive during the check-in period to ensure you are able to participate in the SOAR session.
  • The formal program will end around 5:00 p.m. All student participants must stay for the duration of the program so please plan accordingly.
  • Pen, pencil, notebook
  • Copies of unofficial transcripts
  • Umbrella
  • Comfortable clothes and walking shoes
  • Lightweight jacket
  • Registration confirmation email and parking pass
  • Virtual SOAR Completion Confirmation
  • UNC Charlotte Student ID Number (You should memorize this number)

In the event you have yet to send in your required immunization records, visit the Student Health Center website at or contact the Immunizations Department directly at (704) 687-7424 for submission instructions. A Student Health Center representative will also be available for questions during resource fair sessions. 

Students with documented disabilities such as vision, hearing or mobility impairments, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or learning disabilities that may require test accommodations should contact the Office of Disability Services at least one month in advance of attending SOAR by calling (704) 687-0040 V/TDD. Students must provide disability documentation to the university in order to determine eligibility for services and appropriate accommodations. Test accommodations such as low distraction environment, extended test time, computer assistance, or enlarged print must be requested one week in advance and must be appropriate for the documented disability. Students who need sign language interpreters or materials in Braille should contact the Office of Disability Services at least one month in advance of attending SOAR.
